In Partnership with Aura Sustainable Intelligence and OKGO Smart Systems
With subsidies from the Department of Industrial Technology, Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) has launched the “Local Tourism Enrichment Service” project this year (2025), placing micromobility at its core. In collaboration with Aura Sustainable Intelligence, OKGO Smart Systems, Play Design Lab, and local organizations including the Bali Left Bank Tourism Association and Bali Dazhong Temple, TDRI introduced a micromobility demonstration in New Taipei City’s Bali District.
Test-ride activities were held from October 10–12 and 14, transforming the landscapes, settlement history, and natural ecology of Bali’s Left Bank into interactive Web App content. Paired with Aura’s eco-friendly electric-assist bikes, the system connects a complete local experience route, inviting the public to rediscover Bali through a low-carbon, slow-paced journey.

“We hope more people will come to Bali and be willing to stay, experiencing the unique culture and scenery found only here,” said Hong Yu-Hao, Director of the Bali Left Bank Tourism Association, and Kuo Rong-De, Secretary of Bali Dazhong Temple.
Through the Web App, “visible scenery” is linked with the “invisible context,” transforming them into a Bali experience that can be felt, interacted with, and revisited.
This minimum viable product (MVP) Web App integrates map navigation with interactive content, offering two modes—Theme Exploration and Free Exploration. While riding Aura’s electric-assist bikes, location-based triggers automatically surface story cards. Users can also bookmark content and review their personal travel routes afterward.

TDRI noted that insights from the demonstration tests highlight several key factors shaping local tourism quality: route safety, interviews with local guides, field research, and the linking of place-based experience touchpoints. By applying micromobility thinking to improve the riding paths and experience nodes of Aura’s electric-assist bikes—and integrating scattered local stories and business information into the Web App—users can enjoy a smoother travel rhythm and longer stays.
The “Local Tourism Enrichment Service Experience Test” recruited participants with cycling experience who enjoy exploring local culture.
“I rediscovered Bali and found natural and cultural stories I had never noticed before,” one participant said after completing the on-site ride paired with the interactive Web App experience. Overall, testers reported joy and strong willingness to revisit, expressing anticipation for the service’s full launch and expansion in the future.

TDRI stated that this project places micromobility at its core, weaving local culture and stories into interactive cards and route prompts within the Web App. This ensures that users can follow safe and clear guidance, maintain a smooth slow-travel rhythm, and effectively extend their time spent in the area.
In addition, through on-site testing and participant interviews, the research team transformed feedback into insights for optimizing content presentation and service flow—demonstrating the institute’s capability in applying design to enhance local tourism.
Many participants expressed that they greatly enjoyed the experience and hoped for more events like this, underscoring the importance of linking local content with deep, meaningful exploration.
TDRI is optimistic that the next stage of developing micromobility-driven local tourism enhancement services will continue to center on local content. By deepening these experience-based services, users will be encouraged to linger longer, return for repeat visits, and connect more closely with local culture—collectively shaping a distinctive and authentic travel experience unique to each place.
